Many of you that follow me on twitter know that I am a huge fan of Sun Tzu. I drop tidbits on my feed every now and then. One of my favorite quotes is the following:
The general who wins the battle makes many calculations in his temple before the battle is fought.
Seems like I’m not the only Sun Tzu fan out there. Apparently, Marvel’s Kevin Feige is not only a fan but a HUGE student of the ancient Chinese Military General. Case in point, in today’s excellent WIRED piece How Marvel Unified Its Movie Universe (And Why That Won’t Be Easy for DC), he dropped the following:
Ask Feige what makes his particular kind of world-building possible and he says, simply, “have a plan.” It doesn’t have to be set in stone, he adds. His current estimate is that Marvel movies have been three-quarters plan and 25 percent bob-and-weave.
How far along has Feige planned Marvel for success? Try 2021.
“I could arguably say what we’re planning for the year 2021,” Feige told WIRED. “Will that happen? I don’t know. But what we planned for 2015 in 2006 is happening.”
I get asked all the time what’s the difference between Marvel and DC, and simply put Marvel is it’s own entity that makes it’s own films while DC is an entity under Warner Brothers that makes films. Marvel is not scared to take risks while DC hasn’t remained impotent since The Green Lantern and is now only beginning to recover. If you thought Marvel was only going to do Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, and Avengers movies, think again. Marvel is not resting on their laurels, they’re going to continue challenging themselves and expand. Kevin Feige added:
“Five years ago, looking at our plan, we knew that if Avengers was going to work, the movies had to stand alone,” he says. “Now we have to prove to the studio that we’re more than just these five characters, these five franchises.”
What might Phase 3 bring? For starters, you can bank on Doctor Strange which we exclusively previewed HERE (Part 1) and HERE (Part 2). Black Panther is hopefully another one that makes a Phase 3 appearance.
Regardless, I would not count DC out whatsoever. Are you kidding me? Putting Batman and Superman together in movie got the entire planet EXCITED. For the summer 2015, right now DC is like that sixth seed playoff contender team that goes on the road throughout the playoffs and ends up winning the superbowl. Having not one but two allstars like Batman and Superman together as your starters against The Avengers? I haven’t looked at the scouting report, but I wouldn’t bet against the World’s Finest. Just sayin’.
What do you think? Chime in your thoughts below and keep it clean because I wield the banhammer. Who do you got as the winner for the box office battle of 2015? Marvel or DC?
But that is not all…
